Why mediators aim for a stress-free divorce - Marcia Mediation

At Marcia Mediation, we adopt a forward-focused approach to financial mediation and the division of assets. ...

April is Stress Awareness Month and as divorce mediators we know that separation, whether it’s the end of a marriage, civil partnership or any long-term relationship, can be an incredibly stressful time for all concerned.

But divorce mediators specialise in reducing those stress levels as far as possible for all parties involved – so why is this so important?

Well it’s partly about keeping everyone comfortable and relaxed as much as possible during an incredibly challenging life stage, but it goes beyond that, with good practical reasons to keep the stress levels low during divorce.

Negative effects of stress during divorce

Divorce can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months or more, and it’s not healthy to be exposed to high levels of stress for that length of time.

Stress tends to worsen the parts of your physical and mental health that are already suffering, so if you’re losing sleep, feeling depressed or angry about your divorce, stress can amplify these effects.

Long-term stress can have significant physical consequences too, including high blood pressure, a weaker immune system, hair loss and even an increased risk of stroke.

Who is affected by stress in divorce?

All parties can be negatively affected by stress in divorce – and that does not just include the married couple or civil partners who are going through the separation.

If you have children, the process can be especially stressful for them, as they may feel like decisions are being made about their long-term future and their relationship with one or both parents, without their voice being heard.

Divorce mediators can include children and young people in the decision-making process, so that although the final decision rests with you, your children are able to express an opinion too.

Mediators can also speak to extended family members, for example grandparents, aunts and uncles who are closely involved with the children and may have concerns about their future access.

Why is mediation a good approach to stress-free divorce?

Mediators do not take sides. We are able to represent all parties equally, and provide an independent voice you know you can trust to give honest, fair and balanced advice.

At all times we work to make the divorce or separation process easier, less stressful, faster and less costly for all concerned.

That means less time spent arguing or in court, less court fees and lawyers’ fees to pay, and a better chance of coming through your separation on speaking terms.
