In October 2015, Richard Bacon’s private members bill on No Fault Divorce, received its first reading in the House of Commons, but it has not gone any further.

Thousands of family law professionals working with separating couples in a constructive and non-confrontational way want this no fault divorce to become law.

At the moment, in order to progress your divorce, you need to lay the blame at the other party’s door, unless you are able to proceed with two years’ separation with consent or five years without it.

From a mediator’s point of view, anything that helps to lessen conflict and promote resolution is certainly the way to go.

Blaming one another whilst sitting in a mediation meeting about who caused the divorce will achieve nothing but conflict.

We need to move forward and promote a conciliatory approach in helping separating couples up and down the country.
